What Is Color Correction (and Why It Costs More)

Color correction is the term for fixing hair color that went wrong — a box dye gone brassy, highlights that turned orange, a too-dark result, or uneven banding from years of overlapping color. It's one of the most skill-intensive services a colorist offers, and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to price.

Why it costs more than regular color

A standard color service starts from a known base and moves in one direction. Color correction starts from an unpredictable, often damaged base and has to undo before it can rebuild.

  • It takes longer. A correction can run 4–8 hours, sometimes across multiple appointments.
  • It's higher risk. Lifting unwanted color without destroying the hair requires real expertise.
  • It uses more product. Color removers, multiple toners, and bond-builders add up.

Because of this, correction is usually billed by the hour or as a custom quote after a consultation — not at a fixed menu price.

How many sessions it takes

It depends on the gap between where the hair is and where you want it.

  • Minor fixes (toning down brass, evening out tone): often one session.
  • Major changes (dark box dye to blonde, or removing years of buildup): typically 2–4 sessions spaced weeks apart, to protect the hair.

A reputable colorist will tell you the realistic timeline upfront. Anyone promising a dramatic correction in one sitting may be risking your hair's integrity.

How to avoid needing it

  • Be honest at the consultation about every product that's touched your hair, including box dye and henna.
  • Don't chase a dramatic color change in a single appointment.
  • For big changes, choose a colorist who specializes in correction — and expect to pay for that expertise.
